Gary Smith:

CLASS OF 1967
Hartford city, IN

Gary's Story

Graduated 1967 and went to work for Woolard electric. Dated Teresa Hopkins from1966 untill she graduated in 69 then we got married. In 1970 we had or son Leland Maxwell. That although not planned, was my ticket for NOT going to Viet Nam. Three years later we had Yolanda Mae then surprise! Fourteen months later we had Jolene Adele. During that time Teresa and I became Jehovah's Witnesses and credit our love and marital longevity to our worship and love for man's Creator, Jehovah God, and our responsibility to him to honor each other and the sanctity of the marriage arrangement which He established. In 1971 I changed employment to Marion In. to Skyline Electric and worked there 18 years before hiring in at the General Motors stamping plant. After 4 years there, they layed off several skilled trades but within 2 weeks, Delco Electronics called us to work in Kokomo. At that point we left Hartford City and moved to Kokomo with our three kids in tow. My employment in Kokomo lasted untill 2004, I then transfered to the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, KY and we just love it here and plan to stay...Expand for more
after I retire in three years or so. While we were in Kokomo, our two daughters got married. Yoland moved to Florida and Jolene Moved to Lafayette. The saddest point in our life happened there as well. The day before Leland turned 30 he accidentally fatally shot himself with the proverbally "unloaded gun." Needless to say that was a blow that took a long time to get past. Jolene has since re-married and now lives in Noblesville. She acquired a step daughter in the process and on April 1 2007 she had a daughter Kaylee Adele, so now we have one inherited grand daughter and one blood grand daughter. Pretty cool being grand parents! Yolanda though was not able to have children. So, here we are in Bowling Green Kentucky. We go back occasionally to visit my mom and two sisters in Hartford City. Teresa's parents are both deceased but her two brothers are in Missouri now so we try to see them a couple times a year as well. Our health is relatively still good but definitely notice being in our 60's we dont have the stamina we use to but I guess you just have to accept that and do the best you can.
